Taking Stock: Market snaps 4-day winning streak; Nifty below 23,350, Sensex down 330 pts - TradingView

Indian equity benchmarks snapped a four-day winning streak on Friday, September 26, 2026, as profit-booking emerged across banking, financials, and IT counters. The S&P BSE Sensex declined 330 points, while the Nifty50 slipped below the 23,350 mark, according to data from TradingView. The fall marked the end of a strong four-session rally that had pushed the indices to fresh short-term highs earlier in the week.

The session opened on a positive note, with the Sensex briefly touching intraday highs in early trade. However, selling pressure intensified in the afternoon, dragging the index lower. The Nifty50, which had been hovering above 23,400 in the first half, broke below 23,350 as heavyweight stocks witnessed a sell-off. Market breadth turned negative, with more declining stocks than advancing ones on the BSE. Analysts say the decline was largely technical in nature, driven by profit-taking after the recent upmove rather than any fresh negative trigger.

β€œThe market had rallied for four consecutive sessions, and some consolidation was expected. Today's fall is a healthy correction, and the broader trend remains intact as long as the Nifty holds above key support levels,” analysts say, adding that global cues and quarterly earnings will dictate the near-term direction.

Among sectoral indices, banking and financial services bore the brunt of the selling. The Nifty Bank index fell sharply, mirroring the weakness in large private and public sector banks. IT stocks also came under pressure, with the Nifty IT index ending lower. On the other hand, select pharma and FMCG names managed to buck the trend, providing some support to the market. The volatility index, India VIX, rose, indicating heightened uncertainty among traders.

In the broader market, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices also ended in the red, though the decline was relatively contained compared to the benchmarks. Market participants are now eyeing global developments, including US economic data and crude oil price movements, for further cues. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net buyers in recent sessions, but their activity on Friday remained mixed, according to provisional exchange data.

Technically, the Nifty50 has immediate support around the 23,200–23,250 zone, while resistance is seen near 23,500. A decisive break below support could trigger further correction, whereas a rebound from current levels may help the index reclaim its winning momentum. Traders are advised to remain cautious and avoid aggressive positions ahead of the weekend.

Looking ahead, the market will react to global cues, currency movements, and any fresh policy announcements. With the September derivatives expiry behind us, focus shifts to the upcoming earnings season and macroeconomic data. Investors are likely to adopt a stock-specific approach, given the prevailing volatility. For detailed market analysis and daily updates, visit MarketToMoney.co.in.
