Sensex Rises, Nifty Slips at Open as Markets Turn Cautious

26 August 2026 By Sankar Kumar

Indian equity markets opened on a mixed note on Thursday, with the Sensex edging higher while the Nifty slipped into the red, reflecting a cautious mood among investors. The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 0.2% to 82,133.45 in early trade, while the broader NSE Nifty declined 0.1% to 25,145.60. The divergence comes amid global uncertainty and profit-booking in select heavyweight stocks.

Market analysts attribute the mixed opening to a lack of fresh triggers and lingering concerns over global interest rates. "Investors are adopting a wait-and-watch approach ahead of key economic data releases," they said, adding that valuations remain stretched after a strong rally in recent weeks. The cautious sentiment is also reflected in the volatility index, which edged up 1.5% to 13.2, indicating higher expected market swings.

Sectoral performance was varied. While IT and FMCG stocks provided support, banking and auto shares witnessed selling pressure. Among the top gainers on the Sensex were Infosys and Hindustan Unilever, while HDFC Bank and Maruti Suzuki dragged the index lower. The broader market showed resilience, with midcap and smallcap indices trading flat to slightly positive.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the previous session, offloading shares worth ₹1,245 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹980 crore. The rupee remained stable at 83.45 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, global cues were subdued, with Asian markets trading mixed and US futures pointing to a flat open.

Nifty 25,145.60 -0.1%

"The market is in a consolidation phase, with investors awaiting fresh triggers. The mixed opening suggests that participants are not willing to take aggressive positions."

Looking ahead, traders will closely monitor corporate earnings and global central bank commentary. The cautious stance may persist in the near term, but any positive surprise on the economic front could revive buying interest. For now, market participants are advised to stay focused on stock-specific moves and maintain adequate risk management.
