Sensex, Nifty Recover as Oil Prices Moderate; IT Leads

30 September 2026 By Sankar Kumar

Indian equity benchmarks staged a smart recovery on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty rebounding from early losses as global crude oil prices moderated and information technology (IT) stocks led the charge. The reversal in sentiment came after a volatile start to the trading session, as investors weighed mixed global cues and a sharp drop in oil prices that eased concerns over inflation and the country's current account deficit.

Market analysts said the fall in oil prices provided much-needed relief to domestic equities, especially after a sustained rise in crude had pressured the rupee and stoked fears of higher import bills. "The moderation in oil prices is a positive for India, as it reduces inflationary pressures and supports the rupee," analysts said. The IT sector emerged as the top performer, with major software exporters gaining on hopes of improved demand from key markets and a stable currency outlook.

According to market data, the Sensex ended the day higher by 0.8 per cent, while the Nifty50 gained 0.9 per cent. The IT index surged 1.5 per cent, outperforming other sectoral indices. Oil and gas stocks, however, remained under pressure as lower crude prices weighed on realisations. The broader market also witnessed buying interest, with midcap and smallcap indices closing in the green.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the cash market, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also lent support. The rupee appreciated marginally against the US dollar, aided by the softening crude prices. Bond yields eased as well, reflecting improved sentiment.

Globally, Asian markets ended mixed, with Japan's Nikkei and Hong Kong's Hang Seng closing lower, while China's Shanghai Composite edged up. European markets opened on a positive note, and US futures pointed to a higher start on Wall Street. The dollar index remained steady, while gold prices traded in a narrow range.

Looking ahead, market participants will keep an eye on the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting, scheduled later this week, for cues on interest rates. Back home, the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision next month will also be closely watched. Analysts expect the market to remain range-bound in the near term, with stock-specific action dominating the trend.

For investors, the current volatility offers an opportunity to accumulate quality stocks on dips, especially in sectors like IT, banking, and consumption. However, it is essential to stay diversified and avoid over-leveraging in uncertain times.
