The Indian stock market ended a volatile session on a flat note on Tuesday, with the benchmark Sensex and Nifty giving up early gains to close near the previous day’s levels. While the broader market remained lacklustre, a sharp rally in Tata group stocks provided some support, even as the much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) witnessed moderate bidding on its first day. According to market analysts, the tepid close reflects a cautious approach by investors ahead of key global cues and the upcoming derivatives expiry.

The BSE Sensex ended the day marginally lower, while the Nifty 50 managed to hold above its crucial support level. Sector-wise, metal and auto stocks saw some buying interest, whereas banking and IT counters remained under pressure. The standout performers were Tata group companies, which rallied after a series of positive announcements. Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Power were among the top gainers on the Sensex, with each rising between 2% and 4%. Analysts say the rally in Tata stocks was driven by optimism over the group’s restructuring plans and improved outlook for the electric vehicle segment.

Meanwhile, the NSE IPO, which opened for subscription today, saw moderate bidding from investors. According to data from the exchanges, the issue was subscribed around 0.45 times by the end of the first day. The qualified institutional buyers (QIB) portion was subscribed 0.60 times, while the retail portion was subscribed 0.35 times. The employee quota saw a subscription of 0.20 times. Market participants believe that the moderate response could be due to the high valuation of the issue and the ongoing volatility in the secondary market. The IPO will remain open for bidding until September 30, 2026.

Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)0.60
Retail Individual Investors (RII)0.35

“The flat closing of the benchmarks indicates that the market is in a wait-and-watch mode. The Tata stock rally is a positive sign, but the moderate NSE IPO subscription suggests that investors are not in a hurry to commit large amounts,” analysts say.

Looking ahead, market experts expect the volatility to continue as investors await the US Federal Reserve’s policy meeting and the release of key economic data. The NSE IPO subscription figures for the remaining days will also be closely watched. For long-term investors, the current consolidation phase could offer opportunities to accumulate quality stocks, especially in the Tata group and other undervalued sectors. As always, it is advisable to consult a financial advisor before making any investment decisions.
