Indian equity benchmarks extended their winning streak on Monday, with the Sensex gaining over 400 points and the Nifty holding comfortably above the 23,360 mark, as a sharp decline in crude oil prices eased concerns over inflation and the country's import bill. The rally was broad-based, with banking, financial services, auto and realty stocks leading the charge, while metal counters witnessed some profit-taking. Analysts say the fall in crude prices has provided much-needed relief to domestic markets, which have been grappling with persistent foreign fund outflows and global uncertainty over the past few weeks.

The Sensex surged past the 76,900 level in intraday trade, while the Nifty50 hovered around 23,360, marking a gain of nearly 1 per cent from the previous close. The bullish sentiment was underpinned by a steep drop in Brent crude prices, which slipped below the $75-per-barrel mark, a level not seen in several months. Lower crude prices typically benefit India, which imports more than 80 per cent of its oil requirements, by reducing the fiscal deficit burden and easing pressure on the rupee. Analysts say that if crude sustains at these levels, it could provide the Reserve Bank of India with more headroom to consider rate cuts in the coming quarters, a prospect that has already begun to lift rate-sensitive sectors such as banking and real estate.

Market breadth remained positive, with more than 1,800 stocks advancing on the BSE, outpacing declines. The midcap and smallcap indices also participated in the rally, gaining over 1 per cent each, signalling that risk appetite is returning to the broader market. However, analysts caution that volatility could persist ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry and key global economic data releases later this week. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net sellers in recent sessions, but domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have absorbed much of the selling pressure, providing a cushion to the markets.

Analysts say the decline in crude prices is a positive development for the Indian economy, as it reduces the import bill and supports the rupee, but they also caution that global headwinds and FII outflows could cap upside in the near term.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty holding above 23,360 is seen as a crucial support level, and a sustained close above this zone could open the door for further gains towards 23,500 and beyond. On the downside, immediate support is placed at 23,200, followed by 23,000. The Bank Nifty outperformed, gaining over 1.5 per cent, led by heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. Auto stocks also rallied on expectations that lower crude prices could boost demand for passenger vehicles, while paint and aviation stocks benefited from the fall in input costs. Analysts say that investors should remain selective and focus on companies with strong balance sheets and earnings visibility.

Globally, Asian markets traded mixed, with Japan's Nikkei and Hong Kong's Hang Seng showing modest gains, while European markets opened higher. US futures pointed to a positive start on Wall Street, buoyed by hopes of a soft-landing scenario for the world's largest economy. In the currency market, the rupee strengthened against the dollar, aided by the decline in crude prices and a softer greenback. Bond yields eased marginally, reflecting expectations of a more accommodative monetary policy stance in the months ahead.

For retail investors, the current market environment offers both opportunities and risks. While the decline in crude prices is a clear positive, experts advise against chasing momentum blindly. Diversification across sectors, staggered investments, and a long-term perspective remain the safest strategies in such volatile conditions. Keeping an eye on global cues, FII flows, and quarterly earnings will be crucial for navigating the coming weeks.
