Foreign Investors Pull ₹88,180 Cr from Indian Equities
In a significant development for Indian financial markets, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have pulled out a massive ₹88,180 crore from Indian equities in July 2026, according to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). This marks one of the largest monthly outflows in recent years, raising concerns among market participants and policymakers alike. The outflow comes amid global monetary tightening, geopolitical uncertainties, and a strengthening US dollar, which have collectively dampened risk appetite for emerging markets like India.
The withdrawal has been broad-based, affecting sectors such as financials, IT, and consumer goods. Analysts attribute this trend to the US Federal Reserve's hawkish stance, which has led to higher yields on US treasuries, making Indian equities less attractive. Additionally, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and volatile crude oil prices have added to the uncertainty. Domestic factors, including elevated inflation and a widening trade deficit, have further exacerbated the situation.
"The sharp sell-off by foreign investors is a clear signal of global risk aversion. While Indian fundamentals remain strong, near-term volatility is inevitable. Investors should focus on long-term opportunities and avoid panic selling," said Dr. R. S. Sharma, Chief Market Strategist at MarketToMoney.
Despite the outflows, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have provided some support by buying equities worth ₹32,450 crore during the same period. However, this has not been sufficient to fully offset the FPI selling pressure. The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, have corrected by around 4-5% in July, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks facing sharper declines. The table below highlights the monthly FPI flows in Indian equities for the first half of 2026:
| Month | FPI Inflow/Outflow (₹ Crore) | Key Drivers |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | +12,340 | Positive global cues, strong Q3 earnings |
| February 2026 | -5,670 | US rate hike fears, geopolitical tensions |
| March 2026 | +8,210 | Budget optimism, DII buying support |
| April 2026 | -15,890 | Fed hawkishness, rising bond yields |
| May 2026 | -22,450 | Crude price surge, rupee depreciation |
| June 2026 | -18,320 | Global recession fears, FII risk-off mode |
| July 2026 (till date) | -88,180 | US dollar strength, China slowdown impact |
Looking ahead, market experts believe that FPI flows may remain volatile in the near term, especially with the US Federal Reserve expected to maintain its tight monetary policy. However, India's strong macroeconomic fundamentals, including robust GST collections, rising foreign exchange reserves, and a stable government, provide a cushion. Sectors like banking, IT, and pharma are expected to attract long-term foreign capital once global uncertainties subside. Investors are advised to stay disciplined and focus on quality stocks with strong earnings visibility.
